Gore-Tex is the most trusted material in the outdoor adventure industry for having superior waterproof and breathable qualities. While many other material will keep water out there are few options that also allow the feet to breathe. Gore-Tex lined hiking boots are the absolute best choice for long distance hiking where unexpected weather can occur. When backpacking on extended trips, you will likely be wearing the same boots throughout the entire excursion, and wearing wet boots for hours on end is extremely uncomfortable and can lead to athletes foot and stinky boot syndrome. For day hikes non-waterproof boots may suffice, but for longer trips we highly recommend investing in a quality pair of Gore-Tex lined hiking boots.
